Nick has been with Mammoet for 4 years and has been on the Sturgeon Refinery Project since January 2015. Nick works in the heavy lift division and operates the 2nd largest crane in Canada, the LR11350 which has the capacity of 1350 metric tons.  The heaviest lift his crane has done on site is 960 metric tons which was Reactors 1 & 2.  He also tailed the cracking reactor which was lifted with the strand jack tower. Originally from North Bay, Ontario, Nick likes that this project gives him the opportunity to be home in Sherwood Park every night to spend time with his family as well as to fish. His father, who is also a crane operator has been the biggest influence in his life and he is very proud of the success of his career. Nick’s work philosophy is to trust your instincts, and believes the best advice he can give to the next generation of Oil & Gas construction workers is to save your money.

What are the Oil Sands?

Composition: A natural mixture of sand, clay, mineral water, and thick bitumen that does not flow like regular crude oil.

Main Regions: Located in northeastern Alberta across three major areas: Athabasca, Cold Lake, and Peace River.

Reserves: Represents about 97% of Canada's total proven oil reserves. 

Extraction Methods

Surface Mining: Used for shallow deposits (less than 75 meters deep) where giant trucks scoop the material and use a hot water process to separate the bitumen. 

In Situ (Underground): Used for deep deposits (accounting for roughly 80% of reserves) by injecting steam underground via wells like Steam-Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) to melt and pump the bitumen out. 

Environmental & Economic Impact

Production: Output reaches millions of barrels per day, driving a major sector of Canada's economy.

Challenges: Energy-intensive processing and tailings ponds present long-term reclamation and emissions management challenges
